BLOW-IN INSULATION
Blown or blow-in insulation is a type of material used in certain situations when batt insulation or spray foam insulation isn’t a good option. While most property owners are aware of the purpose of insulation, many don’t realize just how many options are available to them or the benefits and drawbacks of each type. Blown insulation is commonly used when wall cavities need to be filled but it doesn’t make sense to remove entire wall surfaces or exterior siding to put in a different type of insulation. Your home may also benefit from this type of insulation if a retrofit is needed as part of a renovation or upgrade project.

These small particles form an insulation material that can conform to any space without disturbing structures or finishes. This ability to conform makes loose-fill insulation well suited for retrofits and locations where it would be difficult to install other types of insulation.
However, as the installed thickness increases for loose-fill insulation, the settled density of the product increases due to compression of the insulation under its own weight. Because of this compression, loose-fill insulation R-value does not change proportionately with thickness.
